My “Someday” Folder
Monday, 18 July 2011 13:27
I don’t have a filing system; I have a piling system. Files for projects I am working on are labeled in folders and piled in categories on my desk, such as “must be done this week,” “waiting for someone to get back to me,” and “in preparation for the next board meeting.”
A very special folder is my “Someday” folder. The folder has newspaper clippings, magazine articles, scribbled notes, and conference handouts about projects that the Community Foundation should look into “someday.” These aren’t the imperative tasks, like complying with IRS regulations and continually reviewing our investment portfolio. These are ideas that will encourage more grant and scholarship applicants, improve communications with our donors, foster greater understanding of the Community Foundation, and add more funding opportunities in Frederick County.
Some of the ideas implemented over the past years that came from my “Someday” folder include our donor information kit which outlines all of the Community Foundation’s policies affecting our funds, the annual scholarship reception, and updated fund agreement language. Last year’s “green glove video” that debuted at the annual meeting (view it by visiting our You Tube channel at www.youtube.com/communityfndFredCo) came from the “Someday” folder. And the outline for the community needs assessment that we will soon be completing resided in my “Someday” folder for many years.
I can’t describe my personal satisfaction when something leaves the “Someday” folder and becomes a reality. Knowing we took a good idea and brought it to fruition is exciting.
What ideas would you like me to place in my “Someday” folder? Have you heard of a best practice or an activity that would be a good fit for the Community Foundation’s mission? Maybe you have an idea out of your own “Someday” folder that you would like to share. Please share your ideas and let me see if they have a place in my “Someday” folder or maybe in my “must get done this week” pile.
I look forward to hearing your ideas and your vision for the Community Foundation. By sharing ideas, we can learn from each other and continue to create positive impact that is For Good. Forever. For Frederick County.
