New 5K Race Will Benefit The Preston Tarleton Memorial Fund

Preston TarletonFREDERICK, MD: April 26, 2011: A new event, the Tarleton Memorial 5K Run/Walk, will be held on June 18, 2011 to benefit The Preston Tarleton Memorial Fund. The fund is one of more than 600 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

The run/walk course begins at the Brunswick Railroad station and continues to the towpath toward Harper’s Ferry to a turnaround and back. Registration opens at 7:30 a.m. and the race will kick-off at 9 a.m. Wall plaques for the first three finishers in both the men’s and women’s divisions will be awarded. Those who register and pay the $15 race fee by June 4 will receive an event T-shirt. After June 4, the registration fee is $20. The Preston Tarleton Memorial Fund provides scholarships to Brunswick High School graduating seniors, with preference given to seniors participating in baseball and who plan to continue their involvement in the sport at the post-secondary level. The fund honors the memory of Preston Tarleton who passed away in April 2010. He was a graduate of Brunswick High School and Shenandoah College (now Shenandoah University). His love of baseball began early in life as a Brunswick Little League player, and continued through college as a team member with the Shenandoah Hornets.

“I am very excited to honor Preston’s memory with this run/walk event,” said Hypatia Tarleton, Preston’s mother. “This is the first of many events we will hold to support the scholarship fund at the Community Foundation and we look forward to helping Brunswick High School graduating seniors achieve their college educations.”
