Janis Miller WerteimerFrederick, MD – April 26, 2011: Through June 30, The Community Foundation of Frederick County is accepting nominations for the 2011 Wertheimer Fellow for Excellence in Volunteerism Awards.

“The Wertheimer Fellow for Excellence in Volunteerism is the public’s opportunity to nominate a person who makes a profound difference in the lives of others in Frederick County,” said Community Foundation President Elizabeth Y. Day. “It’s humbling to learn how these individuals have positively impacted the community in so many ways.”

The Community Foundation’s Wertheimer Fellows for Excellence in Volunteerism Awards is now in its ninth year and honors the legacy of the late Janis Miller Wertheimer, a well-known Frederick businesswoman and prolific volunteer who bequeathed the greater portion of her estate to the Community Foundation for the creation of two permanent funds.  The Wertheimer Fellows program, celebrating excellence in volunteerism, is made possible through The Janis Miller Wertheimer Endowment Fund.

Wertheimer Fellows are recognized at the Community Foundation’s Annual Report to the Community each November and are awarded $10,000 to establish or add to a permanent fund with the Community Foundation for the nonprofit or charitable endeavor of their choice.

Past Wertheimer Fellows include Cecilia Bach, Orley and Margaret Bourland, Elizabeth J. Brady, Dennis Cannon, Sandy Cox, Jeanie R. Cronin, Lawrence A. “Tommy” Dorsey, George and Ruth Dredden, Marlene England, Charlotte and Charles Glick, Miriam Lane, William O. Lee, Jr., Eugene Long, Richard Markey, Jeannine Milyard, Viola M. Noffsinger, Frank Parsons, Colleen Remsberg, Edna and Grace Smith, Jane and Charles Smith, Robert F. Ward, Dr. George Waxter, Fran Wenner, Grace Winpigler and Gail A. Wood.

“Wertheimer Fellows are wonderful examples of volunteerism at its best and leave a lasting legacy of giving in everything they do.  The Community Foundation encourages everyone to consider a special volunteer by nominating them today as a 2011 Wertheimer Fellow for Excellence in Volunteerism,” Ms. Day said.
