Marlene B. (Grossnickle) and Michael S. Young; and Karlys Kline; Community Foundation TrusteeFREDERICK, MD: June 8, 2011: With roots that run deep in Frederick County and a desire to give back to the community, Michael S. and Marlene B. (Grossnickle) Young have founded The Young Scholars Fund with The Community Foundation of Frederick County.
The fund will award scholarships to graduating seniors of Middletown High School who plan to major in business, music, education, or a related area at the post-secondary educational institution of their choice. Preference will be given to students with academic merit. The first scholarship will be awarded for the 2012-2013 academic year.
Mrs. Young grew up in western Frederick County and not only received her entire education from elementary school through college in the county; she has had a distinguished and successful professional career based in Frederick County, specializing in corporate administration and human resource management. Music has played an important role in Mrs. Young’s life; she is an accomplished musician, director and well-known vocal recording artist of gospel, holiday, and inspirational music. Mr. Young has spent his career in computer networking and operations. The Young’s are involved in community service activities supporting many local nonprofits, and are active in their church. They have a son, a daughter and son-in-law and two grandchildren.
“I am keenly aware how the influence, guidance, mentoring and opportunities afforded me by others have helped shape my life, career, and the very fabric of my being,” said Mrs. Young. “I’m deeply grateful for these opportunities, and I have an earnest passion to plant seeds of opportunity for future success by providing scholarships. My husband and I hope to help young people blossom academically who, in time, will make a positive and lasting difference in their life’s work and within their community.”
The Community Foundation scholarship program has been a primary source of scholarship funding in Frederick County since 1986. Generous donors make these scholarships possible because they believe in the future of Frederick County and want to ensure that students achieve their educational goals.
