Cavanaugh Memorial Scholarship Awarded by Community Foundation

Frederick, MD – July 18, 2011:  The first scholarship from Elizabeth “Betsy” Cavanaugh’s memorial contributions has been awarded to Kelsey Owens.  Memorial contributions are one of many ways The Community Foundation of Frederick County transforms the unique charitable dreams of individuals, families and organizations into reality.

Mrs. Cavanaugh, a Middletown resident, was an educator with Frederick County Public Schools for 36 years, teaching at South Frederick Elementary and Middletown Middle School.  To honor her legacy, Mrs. Cavanaugh’s husband of 41 years, Mr. Robert Cavanaugh, chose to award a scholarship for post-secondary education to a graduating Middletown High School senior.

Kelsey Owens, a 2011 Middletown High School graduate, plans to attend Shippensburg University and study elementary education.  “This (scholarship) allows me to focus more on the most important aspect of school which is learning,” said Owens.  “The generosity from the people who made this scholarship possible have inspired me to help others and give back to the community.”

Since 1986, The Community Foundation of Frederick County has provided more than $26 million in scholarships to area students who might otherwise not be able to attend college or trade school and grants to area nonprofits serving the community. This tremendous accomplishment is a direct result of generous donors who touch the future with each donation, leaving a positive impact of lasting change for the Frederick County community.
