Frances R. Darner Scholarship Fund Awarded by Community Foundation

FREDERICK, MD: July 27, 2011: The first scholarship from The Frances R. Darner Scholarship Fund has been awarded to Erin O’Sullivan. The fund is one of more than 600 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

In 2009, Merle L. Guyton and R. Rebecca Guyton created the fund with the Community Foundation in memory of Mrs. Guyton’s cousin to support deserving students in their studies. These students also have a strong commitment to volunteering in their community, participating in extra-curricular activities, and investing their time into character-building programs.

Erin O’Sullivan, a 2011 graduate of Tuscarora High School, will attend University of Maryland, Baltimore County and pursue a degree in social work. “Thanks to the donors of this scholarship fund for giving me the opportunity to be considered and receive a scholarship,” said Erin. “I cannot begin to express how much I appreciate this kind gift.”

Since 1986, The Community Foundation of Frederick County has provided more than $26 million in scholarships to area students who might otherwise not be able to attend college or trade school and grants to area nonprofits serving the community. This tremendous accomplishment is a direct result of generous donors who touch the future with each donation, leaving a positive impact of lasting change for the Frederick County community.
