Golf Tournament to Benefit The Sgt. David J. Smith Memorial Fund

Frederick, MD – August 10, 2011: The Sgt. David J. Smith Memorial Golf Tournament will be held Friday, September 2, 2011, at Hollow Creek Golf Course in Middletown, MD. The proceeds from this event will benefit The Sgt. David J. Smith Memorial Fund, one of more than 600 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

Registration begins at 7:30 a.m., followed by a putting contest. The tournament will open at 9:15 a.m. with a shotgun start. The $150 per person registration fee includes lunch, a tournament shirt and dinner. Sponsorship opportunities are available, starting at $150. “We are very proud to honor David’s memory with the second annual golf tournament,” said Mary Jane McWilliams, David’s mother. “We look forward to awarding future scholarships to deserving Frederick High School students and grants to local nonprofits and the military. As our service in David’s honor grows, so does our love and support for those in need. We know David would be proud.”

After graduating from Frederick High School, Sgt. Smith attended Salisbury University.  In 2003, he joined the United States Marine Corps, and later attended East Carolina University.  His first tour of duty was in Iraq in 2006-2007, with the 4th LAR BN, Bravo Company of Frederick, Maryland.  He was deployed to Afghanistan in October, 2009 and was killed in the line of duty in the Helmund Provence in January, 2010.
