Community Foundation Awards Music Scholarships to Area Students

FREDERICK, MD – August 30, 2011: The Community Foundation recently awarded 25 scholarships to talented young musicians from three specific funds held by The Community Foundation of Frederick County. The scholarships will enable them to pursue vocal or instrumental music instruction.

The Sperry L. Storm Memorial Scholarship assists Frederick County Public Schools students in kindergarten through 11th grade gain training in vocal or instrumental music performance.  The scholarships are made possible through The Sperry L. Storm Memorial Scholarship Fund, which honors the memory of Mr. Storm, a well-known Frederick County musician who taught music privately for nearly 50 years and worked as a public school music educator for 35 years.  Scholarships recipients are Jacob Haugh, Maggie Kaetzel, Margaret Knott, Natalie Mixon, and Kayla Scott.  

The Courtney Muse Music Scholarship aids elementary, middle, and high school students in Frederick County who are pursuing vocal or instrumental music performance. To further career opportunities in these fields, special consideration was given to five to eighteen year olds taking private lessons. The scholarship honors the memory of Courtney Muse, a member of the Monocacy Middle School Chorus, pianist, and musical theater enthusiast who died in a car accident, along with her brother Dustin, in December 2006. Scholarship recipients are Kimberly Brewer, Shanna Chang, Elise Duda, Donovan Gibbs, Chelsea Inthasoroth, John Lucado, Anastasia McClarin and Grace Normoyle.

The Elaine A. Heiberg Scholarship Fund for the Arts also provides financial aid to students who have demonstrated talent and commitment to studying vocal or instrumental performance through private instruction, with preference given to those committed to pursuing a career in the performing arts. The scholarship fund was created in honor of Elaine Heiberg, a lifelong patron of the arts who was instrumental in helping to establish and grow many local arts organizations. Scholarship recipients are Emily Brown, Hannah Boswell, Jordan Haugh, Timothy Huth, Ryan Voell, Michelle Upton, Colette Talbot, Jordyn Shaffer, Eddie Hill, Elizabeth Semkiw, Laken Weaver, and Thomas Evich.

The Sperry L. Storm Memorial Scholarship, The Courtney Muse Music Scholarship, and The Elaine A. Heiberg Scholarship Fund not only benefit the community but invest in the youth of Frederick County, enabling them to pursue their dreams and achieve admirable goals. Since 1986, generous citizens have turned to the credibility and expertise of the Community Foundation to establish funds or add to existing funds that provide scholarships to deserving students and grants to worthy nonprofit organizations.  To date, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $29 million throughout Frederick County.
