Scholarship Fund to Benefit Mount Airy Junior Fire Company Members

FREDERICK, MD – September 13, 2011: The Community Foundation announces the establishment of The Charles Lee Dalton, Jr. and Emmaline Elizabeth Dalton Memorial Scholarship Fund. The fund is one of more than 600 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

The fund will provide scholarships for post-secondary education for past and present members of the Mount Airy Junior Fire Company, a program of Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department. Scholarships will be based on exemplary community service and financial need and students may be attending any technical or trade school, certificate program, or two-year or four-year college or university.

Established by the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department and Charles Dalton, Jr.’s and Emmaline Dalton’s paternal grandparents, the fund honors not only their grandchildren, but all the Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department personnel who are first-responders to fires, accidents, and other crisis situations and who provide valuable support and stability to those dealing with difficult and unexpected situations.

The Mount Airy Volunteer Fire Department was formed in 1926, and has served the community continuously since then. Charles Dalton, Jr. was a member of the Mount Airy Junior Firefighters and loved his involvement with the organization. The Mount Airy Junior Fire Company trains its members in fire, rescue, emergency medical service tactics and leadership skills.

Since 1986, The Community Foundation of Frederick County has provided more than $29 million in scholarships to area students who might otherwise not be able to attend college or trade school and grants to area nonprofits serving the community.
