Science Scholarship Fund Announced by Community Foundation

FREDERICK, MD –January 3, 2012 The Community Foundation is pleased to announce a new scholarship fund supporting studies in the sciences.  The Robert C. and Jane E. Ladner Scholarship Fund, created by Drs. Robert C. and Jane Ladner, is one of more than 615 component funds of The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

The fund shall provide scholarships for students majoring in “hard” sciences, with preference given to chemistry, biology, physics, geology, biochemistry, mathematics or engineering. Students may attend the educational institution of their choice and must be attending full-time. The first scholarship will be presented for the 2012-2013 academic year, and students may apply beginning on January 15, 2012, using the Universal Scholarship Application on the Community Foundation’s website.

The Drs. Ladner obtained much of their education through the generosity of scholarships. “We have both been fortunate to receive the majority of our education from the community-at-large,” said the Ladners. “This is our way to give back and help students pursue their studies of the sciences.”

Dr. Robert Ladner is Senior Vice President and Chief Technical Officer for Dyax Corp, located in Cambridge, MA. He invented single-chain antibodies and phage display of proteins. In 1991 he led a team that discovered DX-88, which was approved in 2008 for treatment of hereditary angioedema. Dr. Jane Ladner is a research chemist with the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST), specializing in macromolecular X-ray crystallography.

Since 1986, The Community Foundation of Frederick County has provided more than $29 million in scholarships to area students who might otherwise not be able to attend college or trade school and grants to area nonprofits serving the community.  This tremendous accomplishment is a direct result of generous donors who touch the future with each donation, leaving a positive impact of lasting change for the Frederick County community.  For additional information about the Community Foundation, please call 301.695.7660.
