Community Foundation Announces New Fund Focused on Revolutionary War History

FREDERICK, MD –February 2, 2012: A new fund that will help preserve the history of the American Revolution has been established with The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

The Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter of the Sons of the American Revolution Fund will support the goals, aims, and ambitions of the Sergeant Lawrence Everhart Chapter, of the Maryland Society, of the Sons of the American Revolution (SAR), based in Frederick, MD. The chapter focuses on the patriotic, historical and educational importance of the Revolutionary War and its history in Frederick County and the surrounding area.

The Chapter established the fund as a way to create more awareness about its activities, and to garner financial support. Its activities include record preservation, research, presentations, recognition for public service, sponsorship of local essay and education contests, distribution of history curriculum, and locating and evaluating genealogical records.

“The Sons of the American Revolution is more than just preserving the history and highlights of the Revolutionary War,” said Paul Offutt, Chapter Vice-President and Don Deering, Chapter Co-Chairman, Fundraising Committee. “The organization is focused on the building of our country, keeping the memory of our historical foundations alive and educating the community about the role that Frederick County played in the founding of our country.”

Sergeant Lawrence Everhart settled in Middletown, MD with his parents in 1764, and his Revolutionary War legacy began in 1776 with his involvement in the battles of White Plains and Fort Washington. In 1778, Everhart served under Colonel William Washington, George Washington’s second cousin, and was involved in a number of notable skirmishes until he was wounded and taken prisoner. He was present at the Battle of Yorktown in 1781 and discharged in 1783. He returned to Middletown, married, and became an ordained minister. He is buried in Middletown at the Zion Lutheran Church cemetery.
