TJ High Graduate Awarded First Charlie Wood Golf Scholarship

Frederick, Maryland; August 13, 2007: The Community Foundation of Frederick County is pleased to announce that the first Charlie Wood Golf Scholarship has been awarded to Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduate Thomas Wolfe.

Throughout high school, Thomas was assistant captain of the academic team, secretary of the Spanish Club and member of the golf team. He has been an intern at the National Cancer Institute and worked as a golf course associate at Clustered Spires Golf Club. Thomas will attend the University of Maryland at College Park, majoring in engineering.

The Charlie Wood Golf Scholarships honors the memory of the late Charlie Wood, a well-respected man within the community whose passion for golf defined him. Mr. Wood attended the University of Virginia, served as a Marine, and worked in State Farm management for 41 years, including service as president of its credit union. However, his true passion was golf. He loved the competitive spirit of the game and befriended those who shared his commitment to the sport. When he passed away in May 2006, his wife, Kathleen, turned to the Community Foundation to establish The Charlie Wood Golf Scholarship Fund to help Frederick County high school graduates pursue their college dreams, with preference given to those attending the University of Maryland, College Park. Applicants must demonstrate a passion for golf, preferably playing on a golf team, and need to provide a written recommendation from a golf professional or golf instructor.

Mrs. Wood says she is pleased that Thomas Wolfe has been named the first recipient of her husband’s memorial scholarship. “Thomas exemplifies the interests and qualities that Charlie would have admired in a young scholar. He would have loved to help students such as Thomas continue their education,” says Mrs. Wood.

By working with individuals, families, businesses, and organizations to establish charitable funds that provide deserving students with scholarships, The Community Foundation is among the leading local resources to help students reach their educational goals.
