Frederick County Teachers Association
Donates To Community Foundation Fund
December 6, 2007: Teachers in Frederick
County have an exemplary reputation for excellence in all they do and
offer innovative programs to their students to enrich classroom
learning. Funding for these programs is at times hard to come by and
for that reason, The Frederick County Public Schools Endowment Fund at
The Community Foundation of Frederick County offers Gifts for
Education, which supports programs allowing teachers, students, and
families to participate in creative, unique, and inspirational
educational experiences.
This important program was given a boost recently by one of its own –
the Frederick County Teachers Association – which donated $1700 to
Gifts for Education.
The Frederick County Teachers Association (FCTA) learned that the
Gifts for Education program was making contributions to unique
educational opportunities in Frederick County Public Schools, and
through its Frederick Educators Foundation, made the donation, said
Gary Brennan, President of FCTA.
“The Frederick Educators Foundation supports the types of programs
made possible by Gifts for Education, programs that inspire students
and often spark a life-long interest in a topic or discipline,” said
Mr. Brennan. “FCTA wanted to give to a program that would have the
greatest affect on the students in Frederick County schools.”
The Community Foundation’s Frederick County Public Schools Endowment
Fund recently awarded $4900 in Gifts for Education to:
Brunswick Middle School, to support a
geometry project involving cantilevers and architectural design,
including a visit to Frank Lloyd Wright’s Fallingwater;
Catoctin High School, for an FFA Partners for active Learning (PALs)
project to help teach Thurmont Primary School’s first graders about
agriculture;
Emmitsburg Elementary School, to support socialization and math skills
through a quilt club for fifth grade special education and at-risk
students;
Hillcrest Elementary School, for programs supplying books, after
school recreation activities, and family literacy skills;
New Market Elementary School, for a field trip to “History Alive!,
Clara Barton—Red Cross Angel” performance;
Parkway Elementary School, for Maryland Traveling Science Programs
“Brain Benders” and “Waves of Change—Save the Bay;” and
Twin Ridge Elementary School, for programs that bring together staff,
students, family and community.
Since 1986, the Community Foundation has
given back more than $17 million to the Frederick County community
made possible by generous citizens who establish funds or donate to
existing funds to provide scholarships to deserving students and
grants to worthy nonprofit organizations.
