Catoctin High Graduate Receives Community Foundation’s Fund for Catholic Education Scholarship

July 5, 2007: The Community Foundation is pleased to announce that 2007 Catoctin High School graduate Kristyn Bradshaw is the first scholarship recipient from The Fund for Catholic Education/Kindergarten through University held by The Community Foundation of Frederick County. Kristyn will be attending Mount Saint Mary’s University in the fall to pursue a degree in Elementary Education.

During high school, Kristyn was a member of the National Honor Society, Student Government, Spanish Club, and Family Career and Community Leaders of America Club. While excelling academically, she exhibited excellence in volunteerism through participation in the Appalachia Service Project and preparing story time for youth at the Emmitsburg Library. She is also an active member in youth ministry, which she says has further emphasized her dreams and vision of what a teacher should be.

“I want to be the person in a child’s life that points them in the right direction to reach their full potential,” says Kristyn. “This scholarship from the Fund for Catholic Education will help me to reach my educational and career goals.”

Frederick businessman Peter Plamondon created The Fund for Catholic Education/Kindergarten through University to assist students like Ms. Bradshaw in their academic pursuits. The Fund supports education in Roman Catholic traditions and beliefs by awarding scholarships to students in kindergarten through 12th grade who are enrolled in Roman Catholic educational institutions in Frederick County, or who are attending Mount Saint Mary’s University in Emmitsburg. The Fund also provides grants to those same institutions to allow even more students to benefit from a Roman Catholic education.

“Education is lifelong and can indeed change the world,” says Mr. Plamondon. “I’m proud to have Ms. Bradshaw as the first recipient, as I admire her aspirations within the field of education.”

Since 1986, generous Frederick County citizens have turned to the Community Foundation’s expertise in creating and managing funds to award scholarships to deserving students striving to reach their educational goals.
