New Community Foundation Fund Supports
Middletown's Harp Medical Center

Gloria M. Grossnickle

April 12, 2007: Middletown resident Gloria Grossnickle may have been petite, but her nickname “Stretch” was well deserved. When she and other Middletown residents realized the lack of a medical facility in their community was causing hardship for residents, they filled this need by founding the Dr. J. Elmer Harp Medical Center. Ms. Grossnickle played an important role in the Center’s establishment by serving as secretary on the Harp Medical Center’s Board. It was a position she would hold for over 25 years.

After her death, long-time friend, William H. Browning, Jr. wanted to do something to honor Ms. Grossnickle and her devotion to the Middletown community. He turned to The Community Foundation of Frederick County to establish The Gloria M. “Stretch” Grossnickle Scholarship Fund.

The Fund will support annual scholarships awarded by the Dr. J. Elmer Harp Medical Center, Inc. to students from the Middletown community who are pursuing a career in the medical or health field.

Browning says Ms. Grossnickle was such a devoted supporter of Harp Medical Center and she would be pleased that this Fund will support scholarships the Center provides to students in the Middletown community. “I can’t think of a better way to honor Gloria’s memory,” says Mr. Browning.

The first scholarships from The Gloria M. “Stretch” Grossnickle Scholarship Fund will be awarded for the 2008-2009 academic year.
