COMMUNITY FOUNDATION’S JEFFREY HAYEK MEMORIAL FUND TO BUILD FIELD OF DREAMS

October 24, 2007: “I often dream of being in the big diamond! And wishing for a ball to come my way. I think of being a star! And, when I dream I want to dive and catch the ball, I feel like I am weightless. I often dream of being in the big diamond!”—A heartfelt and moving poem by 10-year-old Jeffrey Hayek, whose passion for all things baseball was cut short this summer when he passed away from blood clotting complications. Jeff’s memory, and his love for baseball will live on through The Community Foundation of Frederick County’s Jeffrey Hayek Memorial Fund.

Established by Jeff’s parents, Brian and Robin Hayek, the Fund will benefit the creation and maintenance of a recreation league field on the 44-acre campus of the Evangelical Lutheran Church in Urbana.

After Jeff’s passing, the Hayeks became aware of plans for athletic fields at their new church campus through Pastor Bert Lane, who along with Pastor Dave Oravec and the Evangelical Lutheran Church community, graciously agreed to let the Hayeks adopt the proposed baseball field in Jeff’s name.

The Hayeks say that “Jeffy’s Field” will be a step toward creating much-needed recreation playing fields in Frederick County.

“This will be the ‘big diamond’ Jeff always dreamed about playing on. Jeffy’s Field will be a place where all children will be excited to pursue their own baseball dreams. Contributions to The Jeffrey Hayek Memorial Fund at the Community Foundation will make this field a legacy to Jeff’s enthusiasm for the game,” said the Hayeks.
