June 28, 2007: The Community
Foundation’s Julie Ann Robertson Cashour Memorial Fund recently
donated $5,000 to the Mid-Atlantic chapter of Neurofibromatosis for
its Camp New Friends for children experiencing the challenges of
Neurofibromatosis (NF), a progressive genetic disorder causing tumors
to form anywhere in the body. NF affects approximately one in every
4,000 children born in the United States.
Sponsored by the Children’s National Medical Center in collaboration
with Neurofibromatosis Mid-Atlantic, Inc., Camp New Friends will
provide opportunities for children with NF to build self-esteem, gain
independence, and establish social connections with other children and
staff who live with NF. Camp New Friends will be held July 15-21 at
The Bishop Claggett Center in Buckeystown.
“My family was particularly moved and impressed with Camp New Friends
as it provides such a great outlet for children coping with NF,” says
Jeff Robertson, Julie Ann Robertson Cashour’s brother.
Julie suffered from NF and was only 36 when she passed away in 2000.
To honor her memory and to help others afflicted with the disease,
Julie’s family turned to The Community Foundation to establish The
Julie Ann Robertson Cashour Memorial Fund. The Fund provides grants to
organizations serving individuals with Neurofibromatosis or
researching a cure for the disease, as well as those within the
community coping with a terminal illness.
“My sister never had the opportunity as a child to attend an NF camp
with other children. Knowing her love of children, I’m sure she would
have participated as an adult. It is very important that children
coping with NF realize that they are not alone and that some day a
cure may be realized. It is heartwarming to be able to support the
2007 Camp New Friends with such a substantial donation. Hopefully,
this is just the first of many,” says Jeff Robertson.
