Frederick residents Mildred and Edgar “Bud” Larson

Larson Scholarship Fund Announced at Community Foundation

November 28, 2007: Throughout their 58-year marriage, long-time Frederick residents Edgar “Bud” and Millie Larson have embraced the importance of education. Equipped with degrees from Iowa State University, Bud in microbiology and Millie in nutrition, the Larsons moved to Frederick in 1949 where Bud worked at Ft. Detrick for 32 years while Millie taught at Hood College, at Washington County Hospital’s School of Nursing, and at the homes of students of Frederick County Public Schools. In fact, Bud Larson served on Frederick County’s Board of Education from 1986 to 1994 to ensure that students in Frederick County had the best education possible.

As they raised their family, the Larsons instilled the importance of education in their three daughters, now successful in their own careers in science, math, and education. “One of our daughters even overcame the obstacles of dyslexia because she was so committed to achieving her goals through education,” Mr. and Mrs. Larson said.

The desire to help others with their educational goals led Bud and Millie Larson to establish The Edgar and Mildred Larson Scholarship Fund at The Community Foundation of Frederick County. By providing scholarships for Frederick County residents attending Frederick Community College – those in the community who exhibit financial need, who have an exemplary record of community service, and who show academic promise despite learning disabilities – the Larsons feel they can honor their commitment to education in a special way.

“The Community Foundation is a recognized leader in providing scholarships to students who might otherwise not be able to pursue their academic dreams. Our fund is an important way for us to help students to begin their education at Frederick Community College, and we will be able to continue helping others for years to come. We can think of no better way to have an impact on both the present and the future,” said Mr. and Mrs. Larson.

Since 1986, generous donors have turned to the credibility and expertise of The Community Foundation of Frederick County to make their charitable dreams a reality by establishing funds, or adding to existing funds, that provide scholarships to deserving students and grants to worthy nonprofits. To date, the Community Foundation has given back more than $17 million to the community.
