New Community Foundation Fund to Support
Nursing and Education Scholarships

November 29, 2007: Long-time Frederick County residents Bob and Winnie Mount value education. As children, they had excellent examples of the importance of education given to them by parents who were teachers. Bob and Winnie became lifelong learners, furthering their educations so that they could make the most of career opportunities. Winnie studied nursing at WCA Hospital School of Nursing in Jamestown, NY. Bob attended York Junior College and then furthered his education with classes from Penn State University.

“Throughout my 42 year career in the banking industry, I continually sought out additional educational opportunities,” says Mr. Mount. “Winnie was right there by my side supporting me as I obtained an education that allowed me to advance my career, where I am proud to say I became a Vice President and Senior Audit Manager at Bank of America.”

Mrs. Mount became a homemaker shortly after their marriage 55 years ago, raising their two children. Their daughter had already graduated from high school in New York by the time they moved to Frederick, and their son, who was killed in a motorcycle accident in 1978, attended Governor Thomas Johnson High School. Together, the Mounts’ commitment to education became a guiding influence in their lives, and both Mr. and Mrs. Mount felt strongly that they had to do something to help others who are seriously interested in obtaining an education in fields important to the Mounts.

Wanting to help in some way, and concerned about the long-term societal effects of the critical shortage of teachers and nurses, Mr. and Mrs. Mount created The Robert and Winifred Mount Scholarship Fund at The Community Foundation of Frederick County. By providing scholarships to Governor Thomas Johnson High School graduates in financial need who are pursuing degrees in education or nursing, the Mounts know that their fund will not only provide immediate assistance to someone as they work toward their educational goals, but that society-at-large will experience long-term benefits with educated teachers and nurses filling the needs of the community.

“We established our fund with the Community Foundation because we want to begin to alleviate the serious need that exists for teachers and nurses by helping students interested in establishing careers in these fields,” said Mr. and Mrs. Mount. “By working with the Community Foundation, we know we can make a difference through our fund.”

Since 1986, generous donors have turned to the credibility and expertise of The Community Foundation of Frederick County to make a difference in the community by establishing funds, or adding to existing funds, that provide scholarships to deserving students and grants to worthy nonprofits. To date, the Community Foundation has given back more than $17 million to the community.
