Awarded First Lawrence M. and Betty Agatha Powell Scholarship
July 19, 2007: The
Community Foundation is pleased to announce that the first Lawrence M.
and Betty Agatha Powell Scholarship has been awarded to 2007 Governor Thomas
Johnson High School graduate Paul “Drew” Nichols.
An outstanding student, Drew will attend Lynchburg College in Virginia
to study International Relations and Business. During high school,
Drew was an Eagle Scout, which enabled him to participate in many
volunteer activities throughout the community. He was also a member of
the National Honor Society, and participated on TJ’s varsity soccer,
track and basketball teams.
The Lawrence M. and Betty Agatha Powell Scholarship Fund was created by
Betty Powell as a tribute to her late husband’s memory and as a
testament to her sons who graduated from Governor Thomas Johnson High
School. The Fund provides scholarships to Governor Thomas Johnson High
School graduates who demonstrate leadership and citizenship, attain
academic success, participate in a varsity sport during their senior
year, contribute to their community, and show financial need.
Drew says he is thankful to be able to represent the Community
Foundation’s Lawrence M. and Betty Agatha Powell Scholarship. “It is an
honor to receive this scholarship, especially since this is the first
one. Because of this, I will be able to pursue my education at
Lynchburg College.”
Mrs. Powell said the Scholarship Selection Committee had a hard
decision to make in finding the recipient of The Lawrence M. and
Betty Agatha Powell Scholarship because there were many students with
excellent credentials. “However, Drew had an overwhelming amount of
exceptional qualities. His outstanding grades, athletic
accomplishments, leadership qualities, and participation in the
community made him the perfect candidate for this scholarship award.”
Since 1986, generous citizens have turned to the Community Foundation
to establish charitable funds that award deserving students with
scholarships and nonprofit organizations with grants to fill the many
needs of the Frederick County community. To donate to The Lawrence M.
