Community Foundation’s Seidel Fund Awards First Scholarship

July 3, 2007: The first scholarship from the Community Foundation’s 1LT Robert A. Seidel III Memorial Scholarship Fund was recently awarded to Catoctin High School graduate Margaret “Meg” Glancey.

Meg will be attending Villanova University in the fall, majoring in biology. She hopes to continue her education through medical school to become a pediatrician.

“I am grateful to be chosen for the Seidel Scholarship. It gives me the opportunity to follow my dream,” Meg says.

At Catoctin High School, Meg was a member of the National Honor Society, a member of the Varsity Tennis Team, treasurer of the Service Learning Advisory Board, and the President’s Volunteer Award recipient. She also volunteers for various organizations including Frederick Memorial Hospital, Rebuilding Together, and Special Olympics.

Meg Glancey’s dedication to serving the Frederick County community, academic and athletic accomplishments, and significant aspirations in life honor the legacy of 1LT Robert A. Seidel III, a Catoctin High School and United States Military Academy at West Point graduate who died in May, 2006 courageously serving his country in Iraq.

The Seidel Family continues to honor his memory through The 1LT Robert A. Seidel III Memorial Scholarship Fund by awarding scholarships to Catoctin High School graduates who exhibit academic promise, participate in at least one varsity sport during their senior year, demonstrate an outstanding record of community service, and are active in their faith.

“We are constantly looking for positive things to happen as a result of Rob’s tragic death. The 1LT Robert A. Seidel III Memorial Scholarship Fund is one way for us to achieve that result,” says Mr. Seidel.

The Community Foundation is among the leading local resources for scholarships, working with individuals, families, businesses and organizations to establish charitable funds to help deserving students reach their educational goals.
