Tyler Dane Murray Scholarship Fund Opens at Community Foundation - Applications Now Available for 08-09 Academic Year

January 8, 2008: Sixteen-year-old Urbana High School junior Tyler Dane Murray was known for his boundless energy, his kindness and generosity, and his ability to make others laugh. His bright blue eyes and infectious smile had an immediate impact on everyone who knew him. A fullback on the Urbana High School Football Team – number 33 – he was a well-respected and much-loved young man. Sadly, Tyler’s bright future was tragically cut short when he died in a car accident in March 2007.

Tyler’s parents, Wayson and Renee Murray, have found a special way to honor Tyler’s memory and at the same time help students at Urbana High School by working with The Community Foundation of Frederick County. The Tyler Dane Murray Scholarship Fund was recently established by the Murrays to provide scholarships each year to Urbana High School graduating seniors pursuing a post-secondary education at an accredited trade school, certificate program, college or university. Five scholarships will be offered for the 2008-2009 academic year.

“When we think of Tyler, we are reminded about Abraham Lincoln’s wise words that it’s not the years in your life that count, it’s the life in your years,” said Mr. and Mrs. Murray. “Tyler was such a vibrant person. We want him to be remembered. The Tyler Dane Murray Scholarship Fund is our way of giving back to the community and a fitting tribute to our wonderful son.”

Applications for The Tyler Dane Murray Scholarship for the 2008-2009 academic year are now being accepted through March 1. To download an application, click here. Eligibility criteria and other guidelines are listed on the application, which is due at the Community Foundation’s office no later than 5:00 p.m. on March 1. Additional information may be obtained by calling the Community Foundation at 301.695.7660.

Over one-fourth of the funds held by the Community Foundation honor the memories of deceased loved ones by continuing to touch lives in meaningful ways in their names. Thanks to caring, generous citizens who create new funds or add to existing funds at the Community Foundation, more than $17 million in scholarships and grants have been awarded throughout Frederick County since 1986.

Those who want to honor Tyler Murray’s memory by helping students to reach their academic dreams may make a secure, online donation to The Tyler Dane Murray Scholarship Fund.  To do so, click here.
