Community Foundation Fund Donates
Over $27,000 To Alzheimer's Care

December 19, 2007: The Willows Unit at Homewood at Crumland Farms recently received a donation of more than $27,000 from The Geraldine Virts and Jack Brady Memorial Fund for Alzheimer’s Disease and Related Disorders held by The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

Founded by Brunswick-area resident Edgar C. Virts, Jr., to honor his late wife Geraldine and former coach and friend Jack Brady, both of whom succumbed to the devastating effects of Alzheimer’s Disease, the Fund supports patients with Alzheimer’s Disease, memory loss, and dementia, including their caregivers.

“The recent donation will be used for music and message therapy, among other services the residents need,” said Eric Nichols, Executive Director of Homewood at Crumland Farms. “And, we will also be able to purchase items to enhance our Geraldine Virts Sensory Lounge and Garden area of the Alzheimer Unit.”

Mr. Nichols said that Edgar Virts is a special friend to Homewood and has been extremely generous to its residents. “We have been able to enhance the services and care Homewood provides to our residents with Alzheimer’s Disease thanks to Edgar’s generosity.”

In his determination to enhance the quality of life of those suffering with Alzheimer’s Disease and to help their caregivers, Edgar Virts has worked with the Community Foundation for many years to create funds that provide scholarships to students and grants to nonprofit organizations serving causes important to him.

“It is my way of giving back and honoring my loved ones,” said Mr. Virts. “This grant will help people who are suffering with the disease that claimed the life of my beautiful wife Geraldine and dear friend Jack Brady, and that is why it is important to me. I’m happy to be able to help in some way.”
