Golf Tournament to Benefit
Community Foundation Wounded Soldiers Fund

September 7, 2007: Preparations are in full swing for The 1LT Rob Seidel III Memorial Golf Tournament, to be held on Friday, October 26th, at Maple Run Golf Course in Thurmont, beginning with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. The tournament will benefit The 1LT Rob Seidel Wounded Soldiers Fund, one of over 600 funds held by The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

The entry fee of $75.00 per person, or $250.00 for a foursome, includes a golf tournament T-shirt and pizza dinner. Prizes will be awarded for longest drive, straightest drive, closest to the pin, and an 18-hole best ball scramble. Payment information is included on the registration form, which may be obtained here or by contacting David Giannini at 240.405.0679 or dgiannini@serviceglass.com.  Registration and sponsorship forms are due to David Giannini at 8219 Rocky Ridge Road, Thurmont, MD, 21788 no later than October 5, 2007.

1LT Rob Seidel was a 2000 Catoctin High graduate, where he played football and baseball and excelled academically. He went on to graduate from the U.S. Military Academy at West Point and served as a platoon leader with the 10th Mountain Division in Iraq. The United States and the Frederick County community lost a dedicated soldier when 1LT Seidel was killed in action in Iraq on May 18, 2006.

As a platoon leader, 1LT Seidel felt a tremendous responsibility for the safety and wellbeing of his men, putting their concerns above himself. To honor his memory and his commitment to his troops, his parents, Bob and Sandy Seidel, established The 1LT Rob Seidel Wounded Soldiers Fund to support charities that provide direct services to military veterans of the War on Terrorism. Grants from the Fund will help wounded soldiers with medical treatment, housing assistance, psychological counseling, physical and occupational therapies, companionship, mentoring, and employment training.

The Seidels say that raising money for the Fund through the Golf Tournament is a wonderful way to help others and to keep their son’s memory alive. “By raising awareness for our wounded soldiers, we know Rob would be extremely proud that we are helping his comrades in arms,” say Mr. and Mrs. Seidel.

The Community Foundation is Frederick County’s premier organization for promoting local philanthropy and charitable giving. Over one-fourth of the funds held by the Community Foundation honor the legacies of deceased loved ones, just as The 1LT Rob Seidel Wounded Soldiers Fund does.

Those unable to participate in the golf tournament may still support The 1LT Rob Seidel Wounded Soldiers Fund. Contributions in any amount may be made payable to The Community Foundation of Frederick County and mailed to 312 East Church Street, Frederick, MD 21701. Indicate the Fund’s name in the check’s memo line. To contribute online, click here. Contributions are tax deductible to the fullest extent of the law.
