Community Foundation Accepting
Music Instruction Scholarship Applications through May 1

March 7, 2008: Now through May 1, 2008, students ages 5 to 22 pursuing vocal or instrumental music instruction may apply for scholarships through three specific funds held by The Community Foundation of Frederick County.

The Sperry L. Storm Memorial Scholarship Fund offers scholarships to Frederick County residents in kindergarten through 11th grade for training in vocal or instrumental music performance. The Fund honors the memory of Sperry L. Storm, a well-known Frederick County musician who taught music privately for nearly 50 years and worked as a public school music educator for 35 years. Scholarships are for private instruction only.

The Eleanor Harper Music Scholarship Fund provides scholarships to elementary, middle, and high school students demonstrating talent in and commitment to pursuing vocal or instrumental music performance, as well as 18 to 22 year olds taking private lessons to enhance career opportunities in these fields. Robert Harper founded the Fund in memory of his wife, Eleanor, who dedicated her life to performing and teaching music.

The Courtney Muse Music Scholarship Fund aids elementary, middle, and high school students in Frederick County who are pursuing vocal or instrumental music performance. Consideration will also be given to 5 to 22 year olds taking private lessons to further career opportunities in these fields. The Fund remembers Courtney Muse, a member of the Monocacy Middle School Chorus, pianist, and musical theater aficionado, who was tragically killed in a car accident in December 2006.

To download scholarship application guidelines click here or obtain them at the Community Foundation’s office at 312 East Church Street in Frederick. Only one application is needed to apply for any of the three scholarships offered. Applications must be delivered to the Community Foundation’s office no later than 5:00 p.m. on Thursday, May 1, 2008.

Since 1986, generous citizens have turned to the credibility and expertise of the Community Foundation to establish funds or add to existing funds that provide scholarships to deserving students and grants to worthy nonprofit organizations. To date, the Community Foundation has awarded more than $17 million throughout Frederick County. Additional information about the Community Foundation can be found by calling 301.695.7660.
