Community Foundation Chairman Robert Kallstrom with William Simmons

New Scholarship Fund
to Benefit Printing Industry

March 12, 2007: Long-time Frederick resident William “Bill” Simmons spent his entire 44-year career in the printing industry. As a young college graduate, he began working as a sales representative for Marken & Bielfeld, Inc., a local commercial printing company. Over the years he worked his way through its ranks to become President and Chairman of the Board, retiring in 1995.

“The printing industry was always interesting because it was always evolving, and it was imperative to be able to keep up. Now with technology advancing every day, it is even more imperative, and the best way to do that is with the proper education,” said Mr. Simmons.

That is why he created The William A. Simmons Scholarship Fund at The Community Foundation of Frederick County to help those seeking a post-secondary education in graphic design, printing, or publishing.

“Knowing that I am able to help someone have a brighter future in a field in which I spent my career is a gratifying way of giving back. I am happy to be able to help others,” said Mr. Simmons.

The first scholarship from The William A. Simmons Scholarship Fund will be awarded in June for the 2008-2009 academic year.

Since 1986, the Community Foundation, has awarded more than $17 million in scholarships to deserving students and grants to worthy nonprofit organizations, made possible by generous citizens who turn to the credibility and expertise of the Community Foundation in creating funds that benefit a range of worthy causes.
