Community Foundation Gives Back to the Community -  Awards More Than $244,000 in Grants

December 9, 2008: During its FY09 grant cycle, The Community Foundation of Frederick County recently awarded more than $244,000 in grants to area nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving lives and enhancing the Frederick County community. 

From civic, cultural, and community services, educational programs and health and human service initiatives, to historic preservation and youth programs and projects, the Community Foundation is a leading source for grant funding in Frederick County.

Grant consideration is given in funding capital purchases, new programs, one-time purchases, music programs, children with catastrophic circumstances, public relations efforts, camperships, and youth programs.

“The Community Foundation is firmly committed to creating even greater community impact through our grants,” said Meta Nash and Kathy Davis, co-chairs of the Grants Committee, referring to the 12.6 percent increase in FY09 grant funding. “We are able to make a difference, thanks to generous donors who seek opportunities to become involved in their community through philanthropy and who rely upon the Community Foundation to fulfill their charitable dreams.” 

Community Foundation grants for health and human service organizations were awarded to:

Alzheimer’s Association, Western Maryland Region: $2,748.00 for computer equipment.

Brunswick Ecumenical Assistance Committee on Needs (BEACON) Brunswick Food Bank: $1352.25 for portable shelving for the Food Bank

Communication Service for the Deaf, Inc.: $2,000.00 for computer equipment

Emmitsburg Osteopathic Primary Care Center, Inc.: $1,025.25 for an audiometer

Families Plus!: $1,818.00 for computer equipment

Frederick Community Action Agency: $10,000.00 for prescription medications

Frederick County Health Care Coalition: $40,000.00 for health care, transportation, and interpretation services

Frederick County Hepatitis Clinic: $2,643.63 for computer equipment

Frederick Rescue Mission: $14,424.89 for kitchen and dining equipment, computer equipment for the Lindsay Learning Center, and 5-panel drug tests for the Changed Life Recovery program

Gale Houses, Inc.: $3,766.00 for furniture replacement in Gale House and Olson House

Heartly House, Inc.: $1,200.00 for safety equipment and parental medical guides for 25 families

Hope Alive, Inc.: $170.00 for a diaper changing station

Mental Health Association of Frederick County: $1,948.99 for a laptop and video camera

Middletown Valley People Helping People: $200.00 for brochure printing

Mission of Mercy, Inc.: $46,287.71 to expand the medical program

On Our Own of Frederick County: $1,760.00 for program materials and computer equipment

Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs: $28,000.00 for prescriptions and emergency dental services, laundry equipment, and an LCD projector

Seton Center, Inc.: $7,500.00 for dental services for low-income adults in northern Frederick County

Tranquility Farm Equestrian and Renewal Center: $3,200.00 for a special needs saddle

Community Foundation grants for educational organizations and services were awarded to:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Frederick County: $523.00 for art and education program supplies at Waverly and Hillcrest Elementary Schools

Delaplaine Visual Arts Education Center: $6,266.48 for Head Start “Art Start” classes

Frederick County Business Roundtable for Education: $2,000.00 for Career & Tech student certification exams

Parkway Elementary: $1,100.00 for materials for “Math Madness” after school club

Project ALIVE: $653.10 for GED prep books

Rock Creek School: $1,976.25 for adaptive physical therapy equipment

Community Foundation grants for youth projects and programs were awarded to:

Basketball Coaches without Boundaries: $4,500.00 for uniforms for summer basketball programs

Boys and Girls Club of Frederick County: $2,746.80 for education programs for at-risk youth

Brunswick Community Clubhouse for Kids, Inc.: $800.00 for a computer and game table

City of Frederick Police Department PAL Program: $3,500.00 for activities and programs

Cub Pack 570, Boy Scouts of America: $1,878.84 for camping equipment

Frederick Alliance for Youth, Inc.: $2,891.45 for Club Explore equipment and program materials

Frederick County Family YMCA: $8,993.68 for playground equipment and seed money for computer equipment for child development center for children with autism

Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra: $756.90 for percussion instruments

HARPS Foundation, Inc.: $750.00 for summer camp program activities and camperships

Hope Alive, Inc.; $826.19 for three field trips

Learning Tree Early Learning Center: $6,804.68 for a play structure and rubber surface

Myersville Junior Baseball League, Inc.: $1,710.00 for a portable outfield fence

National Capital Area Council -- Boy Scouts of America: $2,543.33 for YMCA after school care program materials

Thorpewood, Inc.: $750.00 for the Heather Ridge School program activities at Thorpewood

Southern Frederick County Youth Athletic Facilities, Inc.: $1,800.00 for engineering costs of construction of new athletic fields in Urbana

Volunteer Frederick: $500.00 for Youth Action Corp., Junior

Community Foundation grants for historic preservation organizations and projects were awarded to:

Friends of Frederick County Public Libraries -- Thurmont: $2,375.86 to clean and stabilize “The Grange” painting

Historical Society of Frederick County: $1,400.00 for a free-standing room divider

National Museum of Civil War Medicine, Inc.: $1,700.00 for computer equipment

Community Foundation grants for civic, cultural, and community programs and organizations were awarded to:

Animal Welfare League of Frederick County: $500.00 for Trap, Neuter, Release program expenses

CinemaArts, Inc.: $2,500.00 for an LCD projector

Frederick Arts Council, Inc.: $1,008.93 for audio-visual equipment

Frederick Community College Foundation: $6,660.63 for music, instruments, and equipment

Frederick Composite Squadron, Civil Air Patrol: $715.25 for color guard equipment and an L-tronics LVA Antenna

Weinberg Center for the Arts, Inc.: $3,000.00 for The National Theatre for the Deaf performance and workshop
