Jeffrey Hayek Memorial Fund Makes First Donation to Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County

May 13, 2009: The Community Foundation of Frederick County’s Jeffrey Hayek Memorial Fund, created to further youth recreational activities in Frederick County, recently awarded $1,000 to The Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County. Robin and Brian Hayek presented the donation to the Club in honor of the Hayeks’ son Jeff, who passed away from a clotting disorder in 2007 at the tender age of 10. It marks the first grant from the memorial fund, which along with a donation from Sports Authority will outfit 12 members of the Club with baseball mitts and bats.

Karen Murphy McClain, Executive Director of The Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County, said the donation will enable the Club to buy the equipment necessary to begin a baseball program for its members. “We are honored to receive this generous gift from The Jeffrey Hayek Memorial Fund,” McClain said. “Many of our members are children from urban areas who haven’t had the opportunity to play baseball. This gift will provide deserving children with an organized recreation opportunity and introduce them to America’s pastime.”

As part of The Community Foundation of Frederick County’s family of funds, grants from The Jeffrey Hayek Memorial Fund will be awarded each year to nonprofit organizations that help to further youth baseball instruction and play in Frederick County. The Fund will also support Jeffy’s Field, a “field of dreams” recreation league baseball diamond on the future campus of Evangelical Lutheran Church in southern Frederick County. More information about Jeff, the Fund, and the field is available at www.JeffysField.com

“An All-Star Night for Jeff,” a silent auction event to benefit The Jeffrey Hayek Memorial Fund, will be held Friday evening, June 19, at Musket Ridge Golf Club in Myersville. Tickets are $75. For more information, call 301.639.7533.
