Local Firm Establishes
Memorial Scholarship Fund

October 29, 2009: Having served Frederick County and the surrounding area since its founding in 1965, Linton Shafer Warfield & Garrett, P.A., has strong roots in the community. The full-service certified public accounting and business consulting firm has grown dramatically over the years but remains committed to giving back to the community that has contributed to the company’s continuing success.

When Kay Shafer, the wife of Ron Shafer, one of the firm’s founding principals, passed away in July 2008, the principals and staff of LSWG decided to honor her memory by establishing a fund with The Community Foundation of Frederick County. The Kay Shafer Memorial Scholarship Fund will provide scholarships to graduating seniors from Frederick County Public Schools who will be attending Frederick Community College, with preference given to applicants who demonstrate financial need.

"I had the good fortune of knowing Kay Shafer for more than 45 years,” reflects Donald C. Linton, CPA, Founding Principal. “She was part of the LSWG family, always willing to help others. With this scholarship, we hope to carry on her legacy of kindness and help others as she did her entire life."

Joseph M. McCathran, CPA, Principal echoes Linton’s sentiments. “Kay was one of the most pleasant, cheerful, compassionate individuals I have ever known. It broke our hearts here at LSWG to lose her, and creating this memorial scholarship fund is part of our healing.” “We are all grateful for having known her,” adds Douglas C. Warfield, CPA, Founding Principal. “This fund is a lasting memorial to her life.”

Over one-fourth of the 600-plus funds held by the Community Foundation honor the memories of deceased loved ones by providing funds designated for any number of causes throughout Frederick County. To date, the Community Foundation has given back more than $23 million in grants and scholarships.
