 Stine Funds Award Grants

December 14, 2009: Three endowment funds established by Alice Jean Stine of Knoxville with The Community Foundation of Frederick County, provided $3,000.00 in grants to six area nonprofits, including Fast Friends Greyhound Rescue, Inc., Frederick County 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program, HorseNet, Inc., Community Living, Inc., Brunswick Elementary School, and Frederick County Public Libraries Brunswick Branch.

The Paul L. Stine, Sr., Memorial Fund, established in honor of Ms. Stine’s father, provides grants to nonprofit organizations working to save dogs and horses from being destroyed after their productive lives are over. HorseNet, Inc., a horse rescue and rehabilitation facility received a grant from this fund to purchase hay for the winter months, Frederick County 4-H Therapeutic Riding Program, a program providing safe horse riding experiences to Frederick County citizens with disabilities, was awarded a grant for the medical care of its senior horses, and Fast Friends Greyhound Rescue, Inc. received a grant in support of the Craiger’s List Program, an adoption program for hard to place dogs.

The Paul L. Stine, Jr., Memorial Fund, established in honor of Ms. Stine’s brother, distributes grants to nonprofit groups serving persons with disabilities who are mentally challenged. This fund awarded a grant to Community Living to be used in its ceramic activity program. Community Living is a nonprofit agency providing residential services for people with developmental disabilities in Frederick County.

Mrs. Stine, a retired educator, founded The Alice Jean Stine Endowment Fund to benefit library programs in the Brunswick and Middletown areas of Frederick County. Although Mrs. Stine currently resides in Knoxville, she was raised in Brunswick and still considers it her hometown. Grants from this fund were awarded to Brunswick Elementary School to purchase chapter books for young readers and Frederick County Public Libraries Brunswick Branch to purchase award-winning children’s literature.

As Frederick County’s premier organization to advance local philanthropy and charitable giving, the Community Foundation holds The Paul L. Stine, Sr., Memorial Fund, The Paul L. Stine, Jr., Memorial Fund, and The Alice Jean Stine Endowment Fund, along with more than 600 other component funds. Those interested in starting a fund with the Community Foundation, like Ms. Stine, to further the legacies of their loved ones by supporting charitable causes are encouraged to contact the Community Foundation at 301.695.7660 or www.cffredco.org.
