Community Foundation Awards Scholarships
to Tuscarora Students

September 23, 2009: The Community Foundation recently awarded more than $330,000 in scholarship funding throughout Frederick County for the 2009-2010 academic year. Over 200 students received scholarships to pursue their educational dreams, including 14 students from Tuscarora:

Stephanie Andrews, a 2009 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The Erma Stull Grove Scholarship awarded to Frederick County graduating seniors who are intending to major in mathematics or science, and The Lisa A. Orndorff Lajewski Memorial Scholarship awarded to graduates of Brunswick High School or members of All Saints’ Episcopal Church. Ms. Andrews attends Messiah College.

Ashley Dolan, a 2009 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The Bob and Elizabeth Boyer Scholarship awarded to Frederick or Washington County residents with preference given to students who are: pursuing a health related profession or the ministry; planning on working with the elderly, either in direct care or in an advocacy capacity; studying agriculture with an interest in becoming farmers; pursuing a career ladder in these professions or non-traditional students pursuing a career in these professions. Ms. Dolan attends Towson University.

Juliana Eaton, a 2007 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The Mary E.M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents with preference given to education majors. Ms. Eaton attends Hood College.

Thomas Edwards, a 2009 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The Frederick County High School Football 110% Scholarship awarded to graduating high school seniors who have participated in interscholastic football at the high school level, including their senior year. Mr. Edwards attends University of Maryland.

Katrina Eyler, a 2009 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The Dawn Renee Smith Memorial Scholarship awarded to graduates of Frederick County Public Schools or the Frederick County Career and Technology Center’s marketing program. Ms. Eyler attends Susquehanna University.

Nathalia Gabriel, a 2009 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The Progreso Latino Scholarship awarded to graduates of Frederick County Public Schools, with preference given to those who are of Latino Heritage. Ms. Gabriel attends Virginia Tech.

Allyson Golightly, a 2009 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The Mary Alice and Richard E. Markey Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents pursuing a four-year degree in education or art, and The Kaye E. Ramsburg Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick County Public School graduates with preference given to students who are majoring in elementary education and/or are pursuing a career as a reading specialist. Ms. Golightly attends Elon University.

Corey Grunewald, a 2008 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The Elaine A. Heiberg Scholarship for the Arts awarded to students who are interested in a career in the arts, including visual, performing, literary, and structural areas. Mr. Grunewald attends Virginia Commonwealth University.

Kylina Hanley, a 2006 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The Mary E. M. and Ruth E. Smith Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents with preference given to education majors. Ms. Hanley attends Howard University.

Heatherlyn Magers, a 2009 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The Fredericktowne Players/Jeffrey W. Kight Memorial Scholarship awarded to graduating seniors who have worked on a Fredericktowne Players’ production. Ms. Magers attends Frederick Community College.

Emily Meagher, a 2009 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The William Hurwitz Memorial Endowment Scholarship awarded to Frederick County graduating seniors with preference given to business majors, and The Gina and Bob Taylor Scholarship awarded to Frederick County Public School graduates interested in pursuing a career in criminal justice, environmental conservation, finance, economics, and/or business. Ms. Meagher attends Delaware Valley College.

Kathryn Meagher, a 2008 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The George Wesley Gilbert Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick County Public School graduates continuing their education at trade or technical schools with preference given to those pursuing dental hygiene, automotive, cosmetology and nurse’s aid certifications, The Lewis and Clara Fraley Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents, with preference given to students pursuing careers in nursing, medicine, auto technology, building trades, and music and The Frederick Medical Foundation Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents majoring in medicine, dentistry and/or nursing. Ms. Meagher attends Frederick Community College.

Carol Rogan, a 2009 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The Rotary Club of Frederick Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents based upon an equal weighting of academic excellence, financial need and community service, and The Charles Thomas and Mary Ellen Main Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents who show financial need, and academic promise. Ms. Rogan attends University of Maryland

Jordan Thielker, a 2008 Tuscarora High School graduate, received The David G. Marshall Memorial Scholarship awarded to Frederick County residents pursuing a career in the aviation industry. Mr. Thielker attends Purdue University.

Since 1986, the Community Foundation has worked with individuals, families, businesses, associations, and nonprofits to establish charitable funds that benefit a variety of causes, including 195 scholarship funds. The Community Foundation of Frederick County Universal Comprehensive Scholarship Application for the 2010-2011 academic year will be available beginning December 15, 2009 at www.cffredco.org.
