Community Foundation Awards Grants for 2010 Fiscal Year

April 7, 2010: During its FY10 grant cycle, The Community Foundation of Frederick County recently awarded more than $221,000 in grants to area nonprofit organizations dedicated to improving lives and enhancing the Frederick County community.

From civic, cultural, and community services, and health and human service initiatives, to educational programs and youth projects, the Community Foundation is a leading source for grant funding in Frederick County.

Requests for grants come from a wide range of nonprofit organizations, representing a variety of interests. Consideration for funding includes capital purchases, new programs, one-time equipment purchases, music programs, children with catastrophic circumstances, health and wellness programs, scholarships for children attending camps, and youth programs.

“Our discretionary grant making is one of the many ways we make a positive impact in our community,” says Betsy Day, President of the Community Foundation. “We take our grant making very seriously and know that we are responsible to our donors to be good stewards of the funds they have entrusted to us to award to area nonprofits.”

A grant from The Animal Care Field of Interest Fund was awarded to:

The Animal Welfare League of Frederick: $686.05 for the “Fixing Frederick Felines” spay/ neuter program

A grant from The Bar Association Fund of Frederick County Justice for All Fund was awarded to:

The Legal Aid Bureau: $7,525.00 toward bankruptcy clinic for Frederick County residents

A grant from The Brunswick Fund was awarded to:

Big Brothers and Big Sisters of Frederick County: $800.00 to expand program for 15 Brunswick and Knoxville children

Grants from The C&O Canal Endowment Fund for Frederick County were awarded to:

Brunswick Main Street: $1,019.73 to purchase nine bike racks

The C&O Canal Trust: $900.00 to furnish lock house number 28

A grant from The Charles V. and Louise Main Endowment Fund was awarded to:

Calvary United Methodist Church: $7,127.06 for kitchen renovation

Grants from The Dan Crozier Music Trust Fund were awarded to:

Big Brothers Big Sisters of Frederick County: $460.00 for a keyboard and digital piano

Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County: $1,233.43 to purchase musical instruments

Frederick Community College Foundation: $1,123.85 for hand drums, drum cases, and snare drums

Frederick Regional Youth Orchestra: $1,249.00 for a xylophone

HARPS Foundation: $1,500.00 for harp strings and accessories for Frederick County camp

A grant from The Environmental Preservation Field of Interest Fund was awarded to:

Volunteer Frederick: $300.00 to purchase trees for Youth Corps to plant

Grants from The Joel A. Stephens Memorial Fund “Frederick Keys Care” were awarded to:

Board of County Commissioners of Frederick County, Child Advocacy Center: $1,275.05 for equine therapy services

YMCA of Frederick County: $3,724.95 for a vestibulator

A grant from The Heath Care Field of Interest Fund was awarded to:

Seton Center: $ 913.23 for dental services

Grants from The Joseph D. Byrd Fund were awarded to:

Emmitsburg Osteopathic Primary Care Center: $1,950.00 for a spirometer

Frederick Community Action Agency: $20,000.00 for specialty medical care, labs, diagnostics, imaging, and prescriptions

The Frederick County Health Care Coalition: $45,000.00 for direct care and coordination

Frederick Rescue Mission: $2,790.00 toward 5 drug test cards for the Changed Life Recovery program and $6,552.00 for 27 emergency dental visits

Hope Alive, Inc.: $490.00 for a breathalyzer

The Religious Coalition for Emergency Human Needs: $12,500.00 for prescriptions for uninsured and low-income Frederick County residents and $15,000.00 for emergency dental work

Seton Center, Inc.: $10,000.00 for dental and oral surgical care for low- income adults in northern Frederick County

Teach Autistic Children Today, Inc.: $10,400.00 for therapy for autistic children in Frederick County

Grants from The Margaret S. Stauffer Fund were awarded to:

Boys & Girls Club of Frederick County: $500.00 to purchase miniature refrigerators for milk and juice storage

Delaplaine Visual Arts Center, Inc.: $2,135.43 for art supplies

Frederick Police Activity League Inc.: $2,500.00 for activity subsidy

Frederick County 4H Therapeutic Riding Program: $109.66 for a bareback pad and therapeutic riding pad

Frederick Alliance for Youth, Inc.: $2,640.00 for weekly art instruction of 20 children

Parkway Elementary PTA, Inc.: $1,800.00 for residency of the Mobile Aquatic Science Lab of the Maryland Agricultural Education Foundation for one week

Valley Elementary School PTA: $1,200.00 for six keyboards and 12 yoga balls

YMCA of Frederick County: $1,865.65 in camp subsidy for autistic camp

A grant from Persons with Disabilities Field of Interest Fund was awarded to:

Community Living, Inc.: $603.56 to purchase snowshoe equipment for participants in the Maryland Special Olympics

Grants from The Sharon I. Hooper Fund for Children were awarded to:

Advocates for Homeless Families: $1,500.00 toward activity subsidies for children

Girl Scout Council of the National Capital: $1,660.12 toward camp subsidies for Frederick County girls

HARPS Foundation: $750.00 for space rental and harp rental for Frederick County camp

YMCA of Frederick County: $1,661.27 in camp subsidies for Frederick County youth

Advocates for Homeless Families: $500.00 in activity subsidies for children

Girl Scout Council of the National Capital: $1,114.88 in camp subsidies for Frederick County girls

A grant from The William O. Lee, Jr. and Family Endowment Fund was awarded to:

Historical Society of Frederick County, Inc.: $679.54 toward archival storage containers for the Lee Collection

Grants from The Youth Field of Interest Fund were awarded to:

Frederick County 4H Therapeutic Riding Program: $760.34 for a bareback pad and therapeutic riding pad

Gale Houses, Inc.: $3,112.88 for mattresses for Gale House for Women

Maryland Ensemble Theater: $2,319.00 for a portable public announcement system

Project ALIVE of the Housing Authority: $1,167.00 for learning kits for tutors

Tourism Council of Frederick County dba Frederick Historic Sites Consortium: $4,500.00 for the reprinting of an updated guide to African- American heritage in the City of Frederick

YMCA of Frederick County: $1,865.65 for sensory, perceptual equipment for autistic program
