Jody A. Crum Memorial
Scholarship Fund Established in Memory of Walkersville Teen
April 5, 2010: Jody Crum
was an avid hunter, skilled welder, accomplished soccer player, and an
award-winning member of the Future Farmers of America. Jody dreamed of
opening his own welding shop. Tragically, Jody passed away just more
than a week before his graduation from Walkersville High School in May
2006 as the result of an accident caused by another driver.
To honor the memory of Jody and his love for his friends and family in
the Walkersville area, his relatives turned to The Community
Foundation of Frederick County to establish The Jody A. Crum Memorial
Scholarship Fund. Two events currently raise money for the Fund: a
memorial golf tournament, now in its fifth year, and a live nativity
scene during the holidays.
“My family and I chose to work with the Community Foundation for my
brother's memorial fund because of its high level of service and
expertise as well as its ability to reach more scholarship applicants.
With the Community Foundation administering the Fund, my family
concentrates on raising money for the Fund through the Annual Jody A.
Crum Memorial Golf Tournament while the Community Foundation invests
the Fund and complies with IRS regulations,” said Brian Crum.
The Jody A. Crum Memorial Scholarship Fund was created to assist
students who exemplify the qualities that Jody embodied. He was
loving, caring, thoughtful, hard-working, responsible, disciplined,
and skilled. Scholarship applicants must be graduating seniors of
Walkersville High School and must excel not only in the classroom but
also in their extra-curricular activities and their contributions to
the community. Applicants must be continuing their education at an
accredited two- or four-year university or college, trade, or
technical institution.
Providing families with peace of mind through professional fund
management is what the Community Foundation has been doing since 1986.
Over one-fourth of the 600-plus funds held by the Community Foundation
honor the memories of deceased loved ones by providing scholarships to
deserving students and grants designated for any number of causes
throughout Frederick County. To date, the Community Foundation has
given back more than $23 million in scholarships and grants.
Those who wish to honor the memory of Jody Crum may make a secure,
