of impact and success through our scholarships:
LeeAnne
Flook
LeeAnne
Flook received the Markey
Scholarship, created to celebrate Mary Alice Markey’s 90th birthday
by awarding scholarships to students interested in a career in preschool/elementary
education or art. LeeAnne graduated from Middletown High School in 1998
and attended Mount St. Mary’s College as an elementary education major.
Today, the married Mrs. Myers is a first grade teacher at Hillcrest
Elementary School in Frederick. With immense gratitude, LeeAnne shares,
“Without this scholarship, I would not have been able to complete college
and secure the teaching position I now enjoy.”
Gretchen Duthoy
Gretchen Duthoy, a 1997 Frederick High School graduate, was
the first Robert G. Haas Memorial Scholarship
recipient. The Robert G. Haas Memorial Scholarship Fund honors the memory
of Robert G. Haas, son of Theodore and Norine Haas who graduated from
Frederick High School and became a successful agriculture labor law
attorney. Gretchen continued her studies at Duquesne University, where
she graduated summa cum laude in 2001 with a Bachelor of Arts degree
in Spanish and a Bachelor of Science in Business Administration with
a major in International Business and a minor in Information Technology.
Today, Gretchen lives in Pittsburgh and works for Alcoa as part of the
Global Information Services group. In her free time, she volunteers
as an assistant Girl Scouts leader. Gretchen herself was a Girl Scout
in Frederick from first to twelfth grade.
Donna Scuderi
Home-schooled
Donna Scuderi earned her communications
degree from Hood College in January of 2002, with concentrations in
journalism and broadcasting. She credits her Engelbrecht-
DeGrange Scholarship and her
Esther E. Grinage Scholarship from the Community Foundation for
“making the difference” in allowing her to finish college. Armed with
her degree, Donna worked for a year for a nationally syndicated radio
show. Today, she commutes to Arlington, Virginia each morning to produce
The Don Kroah Show, which airs on WAVA/105.1 FM and WITH/1230 AM throughout
Washington, DC, Northern Virginia and Maryland. While producing a radio
show and running various aspects of a radio station consume Donna’s
workday, she confesses that she loves returning home to Frederick County
every evening.
Darren Remsberg
Darren
Remsberg of Jefferson proved to be a worthy recipient of
the 1999 Dudrow Scholarship, established
by Dorothy Dudrow and her children to support education in agriculture.
Darren graduated from Brunswick High School in 1996, Virginia Tech with
honors in 1999 and Virginia-Maryland College of Veterinary Medicine
in 2003 with a Doctor of Veterinary Medicine degree. Today, he is a
veterinarian with Quarryville Herd Health Associates in Lancaster County,
Pennsylvania.
Emely Phelps
Emely Phelps of Frederick, who was
home-schooled, performed Prokofiev's Piano Concerto No. 3 with the
Washington Metropolitan Philharmonic Orchestra in December of 2004,
playing both in Virginia and Washington, D.C. Emely qualified for and
received The Elaine A. Heiberg Scholarship Fund for the Arts
to further
grow her special talents as she pursues studies and training at the
Julliard School.
Marie Lester
Marie Lester of Frederick is finishing her senior year at
Hood College and has been accepted into the Oberlin Conservatory Summer
in Italy program in Urbania, Italy during the summer of 2005. She is a
vocal performance major at Hood and a lyric coloratura soprano, who will
study voice, opera and Italian during the summer study abroad program.
She was awarded The Eleanor Harper Music
Scholarship from The Community Foundation of Frederick County
in 2004.
Christian Lane
Christian Lane, a 1999 graduate of Walkersville High School, received
The Charles C. T. Stull, Sr. Memorial Scholarship and
The Ruth E. and Mary E. M. Smith Scholarship to further develop his music ambitions. He earned both his Bachelor’s degree of Music in Performance and the Sacred Music Diploma at the Eastman School of Music in Rochester, New York. He is currently Assistant Organist at Saint Thomas Church, Fifth Avenue in New York City. He has earned numerous prizes in organ competitions, including in America’s most prestigious competition, the 2004 AGO National Young Artists Competition.
